Thurston County Auditor Mary Hall will describe the evolution of voting rights in Washington State and nationally, including the expansion of voting rights to women and changes in the state’s primary laws. Participants will also discuss the future of voting laws, including alternative voting methods and the national popular vote.

Through our academic support and adult classes we encourage families, both adults and youth to continue their education whether that is higher education, technical careers, or any other post high school career. We will also focus on the importance of preserving one’s language whether that is Spanish or an indigenous language because being bilingual or multi-lingual is important in today’s society.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS/CONOZCA SUS DERECHOS
Given increased enforcement activity in recent years by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), it is important that local communities be prepared in the event of a raid. Before ICE conducts a raid, immigrants’ advocates are preparing individuals in the community so they know they should remain silent and not sign any documents without first speaking with a lawyer. This workshop will review our rights when confronted by an ICE officer at home, on the street, in a car, and/or in the workplace. There will be an opportunity to practice using your rights and an opportunity to answer general immigration related questions.
Dado el aumento de la actividad de aplicación de la ley en los últimos años por el Servicio de inmigración y aduanas de los Estados Unidos (Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ICE), es importante que las comunidades locales estén revise en caso de una incursión. Antes de que ICE haga una redada, los defensores de los inmigrantes están preparando a los individuos de la comunidad para que sepan que deben permanecer en silencio y no firmar ningún documento sin hablar primero con un abogado. Este taller revisará nuestros derechos cuando nos tontos a un oficial de ICE en casa, en la calle, en un auto y/o en el lugar de trabajo. Habrá una oportunidad para practicar el uso de sus derechos y una oportunidad para responder preguntas generales relacionadas con la inmigración.
Law Enforcement – A Career Opportunity/ Aplicación de la ley: Una oportunidad profesional
This session will be a panel of representatives from local law enforcement agencies including Thurston County Sheriff’s Office, Washington State Patrol, Olympia PD, Lacey PD and Tumwater PD. The field of law enforcement is constantly changing, and we hope to emphasize the role of having a diverse work force. These agencies have many different career paths including patrol officer/deputy/trooper, detectives, corrections, legal assistants, volunteer opportunities, and specialty positions. Careers in law enforcement go far beyond being a police officer/deputy/trooper. The goal of this session is to answer questions from the audience on working in the field of law enforcement. The panel will provide a brief description of roles and responsibilities of each agency present. The remainder of the session will be spent answering questions from the audience in regard to employment in law enforcement. Most of the panel are bilingual in Spanish and English.
Esta sesión será un panel de representantes de las agencias de la ley local incluyendo la oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Thurston, la Patrulla del estado de Washington, la policía de Olympia, la policía de Lacey y la policía de Tumwater. Third session is reserved only for educators.

The College Bound Scholarship was created to provide state financial aid to low-income students who may not consider a postsecondary pathway due to cost. Most students enroll in the program during their 7th or 8th grade year but their ability to receive the college bound scholarship is determined during their time in high school and college. Please join us in learning the fundamentals about the program and how you best assist College Bound Scholarship students.
