Kathy Baros-Friedt received the Humanitarian Award from the Thurston Group of Washington State for her work in support of programs for youth and the homeless.  She was presented the award by Barbara Clarkson, a charter member of the Thurston Group, Saturday, January 18, at the organization’s annual banquet in honor in the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

HISPANIC ROUNDTABLE LATINO YOUTH SUMMIT SCHOLARSHIPS

THREE $1000 SCHOLARSHIPS TO ATTEND SOUTH PUGET SOUND COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN 2014!

Announcement for all Latino Youth Summit Attendees:

2013 Latino Youth Summit host South Puget Sound Community College is thrilled to offer three $1000 SPSCC scholarships!

WHO:  Eligible to apply are those youth attending the 2013 Latino Youth Summit who meet the following requirements:

  • Must be a current high school or alternative school or Running Start student;
  • Minimum of 2.0 GPA;
  • Must submit three letters of reference, to include at least one teacher. Others could be community member or relative or additional teachers;
  • Must complete the scholarship application, which will be available on-line and at the 2013 Latino Youth Summit;
  • Must complete an essay or personal statement. Minimum of 400 words. 1-2 pages, 12 pt. font. Double spaced.

 Select ONE of these topics to write about:

  1. How being Latino/a has given me strength to complete my goals. 
  2. How my educational goals will help me make my community a better place.
  3. How this scholarship can set me on the path I need for my future
  4. What I want to accomplish in the next four years.

The Hispanic Roundtable may request finalists participate in an interview with a Hispanic Roundtable panel. *There will be a workshop available at the 2013 Latino Youth Summit to help get you started with writing this personal essay.

TIMETABLE:

  • Scholarship application packet must be completed and sent to the Hispanic Roundtable via postal mail or electronically no later than March 1, 2014.
  • Winners of the scholarships will be announced in May 2014. The students and winning attendees’ schools will be notified in writing.
  • Scholarship will be credited at South Puget Sound Community College on behalf of scholarship winners for students entering fall quarter 2014, or later if arrangements are made with the Hispanic Roundtable.

Hispanics Set School, College Enrollment Records

WASHINGTON (AP) — Hispanic population growth and improved high school completion rates helped Latino young people become the largest minority group on college campuses and a fourth of the public school population last year, according to a Pew Hispanic report released Monday.

The center’s analysis of Census data shows more than 2 million Hispanics ages 18 to 24 were enrolled in college last year, making up a record 16.5 percent share of enrollments in that age group at two-year and four-year universities.

Simultaneously, for the first time, one fourth of the pre-K through 12th grade population was Latino, the center said. Continue reading Hispanics Set School, College Enrollment Records
